Monday Funday #17: The Summer Sunset!

SS3

Well hello and Happy Monday, readers!

Welcome back to yet another Monday Funday here at The Woman At The Bar!

If you can believe it (we know we can’t), we are actually headed down the latter half of summer already. Time, my dears, oh how it flies. So to commemorate this very special time of year–and to momentarily shut our ears and eyes agains the fact that it will soon come to a close–we created a delicious and light summer cocktail, perfect for drinking as the sun sets on a warm day.

Are you ready?

Recently, we have really taken a special liking to hard cider–but not just any hard cider, but specifically perry cider. Perry cider? Yes, perry cider.

(don’t worry, guys, it just means pear cider)

For the uninitiated, hard cider is a fermented beverage (usually sold right next to beer at the grocery/liquor store) usually apple based, that becomes a slightly effervescent, light, and delicious alcoholic cider. Now throw pears in the mix, and you’ve got yourself a winner in our book. And given how refreshing and flavorful the stuff is, we thought it would be perfect to add in to our cocktail celebrating the summer sunset!

So, without further ado, for the Summer Sunset, you will need:

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • (approx) 2 oz perry cider
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • lemon peel, for garnish

Gather all of your ingredients plus your bar glass, strainer, small fruit press, jiggers, and serving glass.

First things first, wash your lemon and cut about a 2 inch piece of peel for garnish. You only want the yellow part of the peel for this, not the white inner pith, so be very careful to make a shallow cut with your knife. To do this, hold the lemon with one hand, and then slowly maneuver your knife horizontally down the fruit, oscillating back and forth to cut through the rind without getting any of the inner pith. Once you have a good pice, set it aside.

Now grab your bitters and place 2 dashes directly into the bottom of your bar glass. Remember to hold your bottle vertically, directly over the glass. Each shake is one dash.

Now chop that lemon in half, and squeeze it to get your 1 oz of juice. Add it to the glass.

SS18

Next, add in your 2 oz of bourbon. As always, we recommend using Bulleit.

SS6

Next, measure out 1 tablespoon of (REAL) maple syrup and add it in. You will need to stir your measuring spoon around the liquid in the glass a bit in order to get all of the syrup off and into the drink.

SS19

If you didn’t thoroughly stir getting your syrup in there, give the whole thing a good stir now.

SS7

Now add ice to your serving glass, and strain your combined ingredients over the top!

SS9

Top off your glass with approximately 2 oz of pear cider, and then give the whole drink a good stir.

SS10

Last but not least, add your lemon peel!

SS13

And you are good to go!

SS15

Now head outside and watch the sun set, because it is summer, damn it, and you deserve it!

SS5

Cheers!
