What is this? A Sunday post? Something special must be a-brewing!
In our world, spring and summer may be right around the corner — but we all know that as of today, Winter Is Coming. Season 4 of Game Of Thrones kicks off tonight, and in celebration we here at The Woman At The Bar are throwing out an extra original drink for the week: The Iron Throne.
When you are constantly at war and never know if you will survive the day, you need a damn strong drink to keep you going, so lets just get down to the recipe. You will need:
- 1 oz cognac
- 1 oz Stroh Inlander 80 Rum (see note below)
- 1/4 oz vanilla bean syrup (recipe below)
- 2 dashes aztec chocolate bitters
- 2 dashes chocolate bitters
- nutmeg for garnish
Gather all of your ingredients plus a bar glass, jiggers, bar spoon, and serving glass (preferably a coupe).
First, put 2 dashes each of Aztec and regular chocolate bitters in the bottom of the bar glass. To get the right amount, hold the bitters bottle directly over the glass and give it a strong vertical shake. Each shake is one dash.
You may have learned (or seen) that bitters should be placed on the top of a drink. In almost all instances this is incorrect. Bitters provide an aromatic element to drinks and you want the flavor infused throughout, not just on the top!
Next add one ounce each of cognac and Stroh.
But first, a note about Stroh. Stroh is a brand of VERY high proof–160 proof, to be exact–Inlander rum. Inlander rum is very different than traditional varieties, and was originally produced in landlocked areas of Europe. Rum was expensive to transport over land, so they would re-distill small amounts of traditional rum with other liquors to create Inlander rum that could be distributed more cheaply. It has a very strong, almost cake-like sugary smell, but very little actual sugar content. It is truly excellent (in small quantities), and is available at most large liquor chains. If you can’t find it, you can substitute for 151, but it won’t be quite the same.
Finally, add in your 1/4 oz of vanilla bean syrup.
To make Vanilla Bean syrup, just add 1 1/4 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract into your 1:1 simple syrup. Shake to incorporate.
Once all of your ingredients are in your bar glass, fill it about 3/4 full of ice. Then begin to quickly but smoothly stir with your bar spoon, until the ice has melted down to the liquid line (about 30-60 seconds).
Now strain that puppy into your glass, and top with some grated nutmeg!
And there you have it! The Iron Throne.
Now sit back, relax, and start praying that Arya, Daenerys, and Jon Snow make it through the season alive, and that somebody–ANYBODY–finally gives Joffrey what he deserves.
See you on the other side!
